Curtain Falls on Ocon-Alpine Partnership: French Driver Seeks New Home for 2025

Ocon and Alpine Part Ways

The 2024 Formula 1 driver market gained a surprise jolt in May with the announcement that Esteban Ocon would not be continuing with Alpine beyond the current season. This ends a five-year stint for the Frenchman. Who delivered Alpine’s (formerly Renault) sole victory since the name change – a thrilling win at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix.

While the official statement emphasizes a mutual parting of ways, speculation swirled around a potential connection to Ocon’s aggressive maneuver on teammate Pierre Gasly at the Monaco Grand Prix just a week prior. The incident resulted in a spectacular crash, taking both drivers out of the race on the opening lap.

Alpine boss Bruno Famin expressed his displeasure then. Hinting at “consequences.” The team maintains the Monaco crash wasn’t the sole factor. But it likely solidified the existing discussions about a change in driver line-up for 2025.

Ocon’s departure throws the spotlight on Alpine’s future direction.  Will they look to a more experienced head like Valtteri Bottas, or perhaps try to lure Yuki Tsunoda away from the Red Bull family?  Another option could be promoting their reserve driver, Jack Doohan, who has been impressing in Formula 2.

Meanwhile, Ocon finds himself in a strong position. The 27-year-old is a proven race winner with valuable experience. Haas and Williams have reportedly expressed interest, and there’s even a chance he could end up at Sauber if Audi’s negotiations with the Swiss team fall through.

This driver market twist adds another layer of intrigue to the remaining races of the 2024 season. While Ocon will undoubtedly aim to finish strong with Alpine. All eyes will be on where he lands for the 2025 championship. Will he reunite with a former team or embark on a fresh challenge altogether? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: Esteban Ocon’s next move is a story to watch.
